December 22nd, 2009

Sad but true, today’s announcement will be heavy hearted for us to bring to you. We can hereby confirm that the brothers Fredrik ‘North’ Norrman and Mattias ‘Krypt’ Norrman have decided to step off the ride and leave Katatonia. We respect their decision and would like to take the opportunity to collectively thank them both for all the years gone by, all the up’s and down’s we shared out on the road, in the studio and basically the memories and moments we shared of our 20′s growing up together. Fredrik was with us for 15 years and Mattias for 10 years and we were lucky to have the same intact line-up going since 1999, but it’s true what they say – all good things come to an end.

Here’s the official statements from the Norrman brothers:

“This is definitely the hardest decision I’ve ever made. It’s absolutely grievous to say the words “quit katatonia”, even worse to make it happen. It’s been 15 really good years and I would like to thank the guys in the band and all people that I’ve meet on the road. I’ll now watch katatonia from your side…..”

- Fredrik ‘North’ Norrman

“It’s with great sadness I have decided to leave Katatonia after 10 fantastic years. This decision was probably the toughest I have ever made. The reason for this is many small factors that makes it hard for me to be away from home this forthcoming year. It’s going to be a lot of touring in the future so the time for this desicion had to be done now. And I will point out that there is no personal argue between us in the band, just that the time for touring isn’t right for me… This is not what I wanted, but family always comes in the first place. I would like to thank Jonas, Anders, Daniel, Fred and our crew for all those years together. It has truly been the best in my life. And a big thanx to all fans and all good friends I have made out there. You are the best and you will be missed… I really hope that one day when the time is right be able to continue the journey with the band. I wish all the best to you guys!! I’m really gonna miss the life on the road with you!”

- Mattias ‘Krypt’ Norrman

We also know that out of the ashes of a setback new possibilities open up. We’ve already found temporary replacements for the upcoming tours and this will not affect any of our agenda or plans for 2010. Currently filling in for Fredrik on guitar will be long time guitar tech and also guitarist of Bloodbath, mr. Per ‘Sodomizer’ Eriksson while we have Niklas ‘Nille’ Sandin filling Mattias shoes on bass until we decide how to move on with the replaceable positions on a permanent long term.

    this sucks
I've met you guys when you came to mexico and you signed all my stuff and i asked fredrik to play all painted cold when there was a malfunction now i realize he left the band to continue with "october tide" side project anyway i guess it's weird it makes me sad to know that norrman bros. left the band but is also good and cool to kno about october tide's rebirth

As a fan thats really sad and surprising to hear, but I would like to wish the Norrman brothers good luck with their future and also thank them for their beautiful contributions to my favourite band ever.
Also good luck to the other members with the bands future.
  • ajay_bhat
From the fans point of view its really sad and surprising, but I would like to wish the Norrman brothers good luck with their future. They have contributed massively and I would like to thank them for the same!

After the amazing "Night Is The New Day" , this is a terrible shock to fans. But I believe that Katatonia will always continue to grow and supply us all with nothing but exceptional music. Awaiting for another solid permanent line-up.

That's really sad... not happy to hear it but as the entry says, hopefully this will mean good things for Katatonia in the long run. Still, it must've been a tough decision for the guys and I wish them all the luck with what's going to change as a result of this decision. And good luck to Mattias and Fredrik, of course.

Changes are changes, but I have just bought first 3 tickets for Katatonia concert in Stodola Club, Warsaw - 1st of April.

    Waiting for You :)

    Best,

    Miko

Damn, I really hate to hear that. I never thought Fred would leave...nor Mattias. But this can only mean Katatonia will continue to progress and have fresh outside influences. Best of luck guys.
  • everything is not lost
katatonia is not same without Fredrik and Mattias. :((

Sad. Right after the best music (I feel) you guys have put out to date. What has happened has happened though.. But, you'll still think of good melodies. You'll still think of music that makes you feel everything and nothing at once. That same sad place that it always seems to take you when you hear it. Thinking places. Never forget that. All the best from the U.S
  • J.L
    Wow this is surprising!
Best of luck to all you guys in 2010, and I hope you get everything sorted out okay.
I'll always support whatever you choose to do, you make incredible music.
  • Reece
Well...I am sad yet understanding of the situation guys. I know the Norrmans have responsibilities and little ones and having lived the life momentarily of being on the road I know its a lifestyle just doesnt make for good family. You both were kind to me when on the road. I wish someday to see you both again in Katatonia or not I will always consider you as comrades. I can get a passport now and who knows...maybe a trip to Sweden?

I am proud of you both for making such a hard decision and that you are putting your families first. So I am sad and reverent all in one.

Well, all companies have their employees' rotation, so to speak. Katatonia is a company, too, and CEOs are Jonas and Andreas. The rest can be replaced.

Please forgive me my irony - I understand, you are not 20 anymore and the Peaceville golden hen must live. Show must go on.

Anyway, you have my respect for your music.

    It's so sad..
    Good luck guys!
  • It's one of the saddest news from the metal scene. I hope you'll find new musicians to continue your "journey". And I also hope that the 2 brothers will come back soon.
  • Lukas L
And I do not agree, and I can not imagine the concerts without you guys! And I have such an interest in the ass. Katatonia without you is not the same, and until my legs bowed as I read the news .... seriously do not know if I want to be at the concert when you will not play: / greetings from Poland! Merry Christmas spent with family, guys!
  • KRYP71C
Hmmmm. Was there more reason than just long touring schedules & being away from family? Why not just stay in the band to write and record, then have stand-ins while the band is out on tour?

And the two of them quitting at the same time seems more than a coincidence imo.

Regardless. The best of luck to all and I support your decisions regardless of the reasoning behind it.
  • Xahriy
again fredrik quit to re-take october tide project...
  • cyanidebreakfast
This is heartbreaking news to hear as a fan but I wish you the best of luck. Really hope everything works out and I hope the band comes back to Glasgow asap. I was promised a gig here in March!
  • sverd

    Right replacements? We'll see........................................................................
  • kooskinen
This shocking!I would never have believed in the fact that two beloved men step out of my beloved orchestra!I never wanted it, that let it be in Katatonia, than in Opeth!I like all two and my favourite musicians lose the deck continuously!Lindgren,Frederik,Matthias!I hope that this does not stain to influence the orchestra performance!!!I wish, how they make money in the life!let a thing not be forgotten:on Here Hungary we see them as a tourist with pleasure always!I say thank you for everything to you guys!
  • Morke76
Really sad, but it's your desition, the best good luck for you guys, and I'd like to see you again playing together, but I'm happy to see Katatonia live on March too !
We will never forgot you guys, good luck!
  • azeldude
Sad news to hear, allthough it makes me happy to know that there aren't any personal arguments and that they'd like to return one day. I hope you guys enjoy the time spent with your family and I truly hope you return one day! Until then, good luck to the soon-to-be new guitarist and bassist.
  • Xahriy
i saw an interview to fredrik on decibel zine and i don't think he'll return because he says that October tide has become his main project =S
  • Koniu
Are they going to have auditions for new musicians? I would like to try out.
  • jamru
It's sad to hear that. However, I don't think it's gonna change or influence Katatonia's music.
  • everytime

  • Forsaker

I'm shocked! And very sad about this news.......
The show must go on! And I'm happy to see Katatonia in Hamburg in march! =)
Good luck to Matthias and Frederik. Will never forget you two!
  • That is very unfortunate news. I truly hope the spirit of your music will not be hardly affected. All the best for all of Katatonia, past and present.
